So can I order today?
I can feel the peer pressure building

Uh.... apparently it WILL :dunno:
It's fun to insert mythical concepts into everything!
So.........can I order now?
You should make one of those Hitler parody videos but about people getting their plates before you. Oh, and koozies too.
Settle down, children. Dale will be back shortly to get things moving here.
Where is ? Somebody needs trolling!
Dudes. I am waiting on the vendor
We know. Just screwing with you.
I'm gonna start using that as my go-to excuse at work...I'm waiting on the vendor!
My First Spear plate carrier is arriving on Friday so I called AR500 to check on the plates. They take 3 weeks from date of order to make and ship your plates.
So no need to hurry guys. Your looking at a month before you get your plates.
Wait.. Y'all did a group buy on plates ??? Which ones did you guys go with ?????
We're waiting on the vendor.....or so I've heard :nope:
OK.. then you have time to answer my question....
I think dale put feelers out to a couple.
And you guys chose AR500 ?? If so have you ever worn armor (hard or soft) for more than a couple of minutes. Have you ever tried to run, move or perform tasks in it ?
I agree with the steel, which is what I have as the ceramic is too fragile and I know depts who issue it and then do not perform required follow up X-Rays.
However the AR500 rigs I have seen are MUCH heavier than mine and I went with AP46100D with Linex for spall protection. Tested at Aberdeen proving grounds and very interesting open source US govt PDF on same.
Dont get me wrong AR500 will probably work, but the weight will kill you.
Outside of eBay, I haven't found a vendor who sells the 46100d steel plates. And I can't get away from the fear that I'm not exactly guaranteed that the guy selling 46100D on eBay is actually selling legit stuff...with all the scammers on eBay...I've been sold counterfeit apple products, counterfeit otter boxes, etc...difference is I didn't have to get shot in the heart to learn it was fake.
same can be said about the AR500. It's cheap enough that you can test it also it is not a restricted material. Any shop that cuts AR500 plates probably has a WJ machine that wil cut AP46100D
I can show you a piece of 1/2 inch steel that looks like AR500 with a .30 cal hole in it next C4 if you like... As always YMMV, but AR is NOT AP.
Right, I get that. I'm at least comfortable enough with a mainstream business like ar500armor.com that I'll get the real thing though.
Understood, it's your money.
Did you ask anyone if they would cut AP for you ?
No, but like you said, anybody with a water jet could do it. I totally get the weight thing. How much does one of your plates weigh? I'm torn.
dude.. let me go get one and weigh one.. ill be back in a few...
Dude, ok!
I always liked you...no matter what AB says.
How would one get something fluroscoped around here? I happened to find a pair of 1993 mfg stand-alone lvl 4 ceramic plates, but the only way to know if they have been compromised is to scope them.
GatorVET and his veterinary cohort Simmoag May or may not have access to x-Ray /fluoroscope machines. Just a guess. Ask real nice,
Ok.. one (1) 10x12 swimmer cut AP plate with Linex is 6.4 lbs. I think they are 1/4 inch thick, did not measure that this time, but memory tells me they were 1/4 inch then another 1/4 for linex, so just about 1/2 inch thick total.
I dont use the side plates, for reasons discussed previously. So my plates add 12.8lbs to my loadout.
Ok, so that's 1.1 pounds lighter that each AR500 plate which weighs 7.5 lbs - 2.2 lbs more for the load out as a whole. A loaded AR mag weighs about 1 pound for reference. Pounds do add up and if all else was equal id love the lighter option.
really.. thats all... Dayum.. the AR500 rig I picked up a couple of weeks ago weighed a ton and it was a stripped down carrier....maybe his was thicker ??? Are you getting 1/4 or 1/2
So if weight is not really an issue all you have to wory about is penetration ;-)
I guess as long as its not soaked yellow pages, trash can lids and duct tape it's better than nothing !!!
Unless the AB ceramic plate fairy pays you a visit.
well good.. I think that was a good discussion and everyone can feel better about their choices.
