View Full Version : Draw and Mag Change Challenge
AB

I take the entire month of December largely off from shooting and working out. The working out actually stops the week of Thanksgiving if I'm being honest. I'm a little more off my game than usual come this Jan 1 because the munchkin being around is actually very distracting!
I started working out and dry firing again yesterday, which brought me around to doing one of my "get off the couch, turn off Diablo 3 (or any of the Elder Scrolls games, or some of the X Com series!), and start functioning again" drills.
Sounds easy, but I promise it's not as easy as it sounds.
Do 100 draws to the dry fire "click" and do 100 mag changes without taking a break or stopping more than necessary to reset the drill. You can break them up any way you like. 10 and 10, 20 and 20, ect. as long as you do 100 of each without appreciable stopping. When I'm just starting out again, I find that around #50 on each, my shoulders are starting to get tired and, if I'm not being lazy about my grip, my forearms are on fire. Around #75 (so I've done 150 reps between mag changes and draws), it takes effort to focus and slow down to not be sloppy or start training bad habits. The mix of maintaining mental focus on the rep while forcing myself through fatigue is...something.
Like I said, sounds easy. I realize I could slouch on it and not actually grip the gun like I do when it's about to go off (which I squeeze it like it's a rattlesnake trying to bite me) and make it easier, but I would literally be wasting my time dry firing at that point. The point is to make it as close to live fire as you can.
Try it out, even if just once.
There is a slightly more frustrating version of the mag change drill. Do 10 perfect mag changes in a row. If you bobble one even a little bit, start the count over. The stress of getting to 8 and knowing there's only two to go has actually sometimes bitten me! I've done this drill until I couldn't hold the gun up any more because I wasn't disciplined enough to just slow the heck down and knock out 10 perfect mag changes. Good times.

By far, the best shooting I have done has been after months of sore hands and forearms from so much practice. You make some excellent points there. Sounds like some good drills.

Agree 100%
Been following ABs advice and dry firing on my days off. That an a tweak in my grip has fixed my pistol shooting remarkably.

Screw plain ole dry firing. Get a Laserlyte trainer and dry fire while getting immediate feedback of where your round hits. Plus it's a rimless laser, so you can rack the slide as much as you like and it stays right in there.

I have a better than average ability to track my sights and call my shots. I can pretty much always tell when the striker falls where the sights are/were. There's a few drills on how to learn how to call your shots, but they are all a bit esoteric and I really think it boils down to a bunch of rounds downrange while trying to develop that particular skill.

Thanks for that info AB - he was having a hard time lowering his gun for this photo.
I wanted everything tight and compressed for the photo. Not so easy to get everything just right without a little artistic license and some direction.
I had him do the drill at least 30-40 times, in a row, wrong way, just for the photo.
Hope it didn't screw up his kung-fu after that for a while.
I'd like to photograph you doing drills some day out at the range.

And in the FWIW department I can definitely corroborate Triad's "this is a photo composition as opposed to genuine action" statement. I've worked with this guy. Morgan (his name) is one bad motor scooter for real.

This was a working photo and was during the process of getting a "real" one, which I can't show. As discussed, many takes in order to get the final image. Morgan was a real sport and it was an honor to work with him (also Kevin). I agree with Mike - he is totally tricked out. In other "real-fire" photos, I had to trust him fully, and in his case (as well as other trained professionals during this photo shoot), it was easy. Completely professional and highly skilled. Again a real honor to work with him.
You don't get this close without complete trust - trust they won't accidentally shoot you, and trust that their close-quarters training won't fail. In order to get the action shots I wanted, the camera lens angle had to be just right, in order to capture barrel flash, I had to be almost in the line of fire:
http://artbiz.com/images/Talon/kevin-morgan/_DSC1719.jpg
These are some serious highly trained professionals. Once I explained what I was after, they answered my questions about safety to my satisfaction and we went ahead, without a hitch. It really is an honor to get an inside glimpse of their world, one that is not often seen.
The training AB is talking about is so critical, and I was impressed at how good these guys are.
Looking forward to working with you, one day too, AB.

Consider that one is right-handed, one is left-handed - it meant that their normal "front foot forward" had to be changed in order to get this photo. A few drills and good to go - right in step and in sync.
http://artbiz.com/images/Talon/kevin-morgan/_DSC1633-kevin-morgan.jpg
What training aspect so ingrained, is evident in this photo, above? (Bearing in mind this is a split-second image capture).
Answer relates to the OP.

I believe I caught him in stride, taking off, so perhaps difficult to say, unless you would prefer a flat footed shuffle for more stability.... if that's what you mean. This was a more "quick walk" I asked them to do for the photo setup that followed.
You didn't see what's happening in the bottom photo? Something important going on there.

Yeah, from ball of the foot to ball of the foot while in motion. Keeps the head from bobbing up and down, keeping the sights on target. Also allows squeezing the trigger from ball to ball while have rigid recoil abutment. Also used to keep the shooter from stepping on or in something he can't get back out of. Also keeps the shooter from stumbling over debris by sweeping foot. If he's on the heel its because he planted it. Anal, I understand, but that's kinda what we do.
Yeah. His slide was locked to the rear after running dry and his finger transitioned to straight and off the trigger.
Triad
January 4th, 2015, 05:17 PM
Good observation on the lock-back and finger transition. Remember this is a sequence of perhaps 40-50- photos, with me tracking beside them. His next split second move was to combat reload without breaking stride or synchronicity. I liked this photo because it showed the discipline of returning to off-trigger even if split-second, before transitioning to reload. This is what AB is talking about - so much drilling, it just becomes second nature. I have to admit, I was surprised when I saw this frame - I would have thought it would have been to go directly from firing to combat reload, in this situation. Impressive discipline. (Of course bearing in mind I asked them to boogie and rapid fire as quickly as possible).

Well, he works at Talon so he undoubtedly learned that technique from serving with the Kangaroo Cavalry in space and fighting through Nazi moon bases where he swallowed a nuclear warhead in order to save the inhabitants of the 9 known dimensions. Somehow conveniently, there's no quasar room clearing classes on the site but I'll need to email Avery to try to line it up. We know, we know.

AB you try to do this every day? Also do you combine the draw/dry fire and mag changes or do them completely separate?
AB
January 7th, 2015, 04:31 PM
I do it every other day, because I work out on the off days. Between work and the munchkin, time is at a premium so I have enough time to train one thing per day. I have enough true-weight dummy rounds to fill one magazine, so I do them separately. I never practice draws with a "light" gun, because it throws the balance off. I also never practice mag changes with an empty mag for the same reason. For complete clarification, I drop an empty magazine from the gun during dry fire mag changes. A loaded mag will evacuate the magwell faster than an empty one and also hide any mild hiccups in the process.
To make sure my mag changes are slick, I have run a sander with 600 grit over the mags and give the top third a coat of automotive wax. Super slick.

Now that is an interesting approach. I have never heard of anyone doing that. I will have to try this.
AB
January 8th, 2015, 09:46 AM
It's frustrating to hit the eject button and have the mag hang up, and as polymer mags get subjected to abuse they get out of spec slightly and need some tuning. In most cases, I'd just ditch the mag in the trash and get another one but Glock 22 mags were scarce last time I looked. Easy to get with a new gun, which is where they were all going.
Might have to look into availability again, my mags are getting fairly beaten up.
Evil_McNasty
January 8th, 2015, 09:50 AM
Yeah I have definitely seen the fuzzy plastic build up on the outer shell of Glock mags. And the hang up as well. I have found myself recently doing the flip/rotation thing to sling the empty mags out. I will try to slick them up like you said.

Evil,
About 8 months ago, recorded at the house with a .9sec par time set. I can consistantly draw from a regular ALS duty holster to full extension. However I was informed that was "simulated" At about the same time I did it on demand at the range and got it at 1.2 seconds. I have over 10k more draw strokes since then, probably closer to 20k. I think I could draw and hip shoot in under 1 sec and confident I could probably present to full extension sub 1 sec also.
AB
February 23rd, 2015, 04:07 PM
My "how fast can you draw to the first shot" criteria is fairly realistic. I give NJC a hard time (and have done so with others in the past) because I can draw a LOT faster than I can accurately hit something, and most other folks can as well.
A long time ago, my buddies and I were shooting together regularly (I miss those days!). We arbitrarily decided that for any draw time to count for the record or bragging rights (Razz still holds that record, BTW), it had to be from seven yards (or more), it had to be to full extension with a two-handed shooting grip, and the shot must hit the A or C zone of a USPSA target.
Now, to be ultimately fair and not post unrealistic times, I won't post a shot time unless I meet all of the above criteria AND be able to reproduce the results at least eight out of ten times. Never mistake your record time for your "on demand" time. They will be different, I promise.

I'm experiencing a period of personal development. I've learned some new footwork that I'm having to actually think about (for now) and because my brain is on my feet it darn sure isn't on my hands and trigger finger. I was out again today shooting and my hits were disappointing, although the clock time was pretty solid. I had to step back a second and think about what was going on, and it is that I have introduced something new into the mix that requires processing power. Now I just have to wait until the "new way" simply becomes "the way."
I hate these times, but I've learned to recognize them as progress even if hits all over the paper sure don't feel or look like it!

My time overlapped with AB at the range today for a little bit.
Made some payments on skills today. Lots of dot drills and trigger stripe drills.
Ran the 2-2-4-2-2 drill with the rifle.. Targets were at least 8 feet apart. From 10yds my fastest was 5.41 seconds. All hits were A zone, timer was a pact club. Not sure if this is my fastes, I only ran it 3 or 4 times and that was the fastest for the day. Will try again.
I also practiced the draw and one shot from an ALS holster. From a distance of 6 feet, draw with strong side only to full extension from the interview stance. Only did about 10 attempts. Fastest was 1.00 average was 1.14 on the same timer. Last time I tried it i was 1.2 range so the dry fire is definitely improving mechanics and technique.
I then shot the HK45 that I got in trade from Chenzzo.. I love this pistol. I shot 50 rounds. IT fits my hand better than the glock and even though the Da/SA trigger is long and light it shoots better for me. I think I am going to have to put a LEM kit and some night sights on it. Dont think my boss will allow the .45acp for duty, so I 'll try and get approval for off duty first.
Thats is all. Very positive day at the range, I enjoy it when I feel the vaue of every round fired.

What was the failure point? Identify weaknesses, develop a program to address them, practice the program, rinse, repeat. I wouldn't worry about taking a step back on the third match you've ever shot.
I didn't do any dry fire, but today was the third live-fire day in a row. I identified a big weakness and I've spent the last three weeks shooting basically the same drill over and over and over again. Today is the first day I've seen real progress, and I'll continue to hammer it for probably the next three weeks.

Issue seems to be I was holding the gun too tight with my right hand. At least that is what I've self diagnosed from where my shots went. (Low Left).
Funny thing is, I had problems with only 9mm glocks. I cleared the plate rack in 5.5 seconds with the 21. And I know that's not fast for most but that was for me.

Low left on a Glock can also be indicative of the finger not being flat enough across the trigger face or (but most likely and) pulling the trigger too fast for the grip you have. Remind me and I'll watch your grip when we shoot at C4.
Don't knock a 5.5 second run. It's damn fast for someone who is trying to break out of the 6's!

What do you think of the LaserLyte system (or similar) as an addition to your regimen?
Also, do you think that by racking the slide after every shot you ingrain that and will try to do it under stress?

Dale,
I constantly watch for it and sofar it has not been an issue. However I do not just dryfire on a whim..I have a routine of clearing the pistol or rifle, putting away the ammo, putting on my belt/holster, setting up my target, cheacking the firearm again etc.. that differentiates for me dry fire from everything else. Now can I say it works 100%, well yes up to now. I am very careful about my dry fire and have not racked the chamber on a live round at the range yet.
Now I guess I could drop the $400 for a training pistol or $200 for a resetting trigger but here is my problem with that. I want to practice on the firearm I carry and get used to how it feels and its trigger... for this reason I stay away from training guns.
I have very little experience with the laserlite system but people who have them love them. It is said to be very good for letting you see visually if any part of your technique is in need of work. Again to the best of my knowledge, the slide will still need to be racked each time so that the firing pin can actuate the laser unless you get a training gun, then see my above.
Dale, Dry practice works...I see the results. But it has to be concentrated, focused training on each trigger pull, not just counting off sloppy technique.
Hope this helps !

I think it is a great tool you would quickly grow out of. If you're paying attention to the front sight as you dry fire, you will know what position it was in when the sear broke. I would try the regular ol' dry fire consistently for a month and if you see no improvement, it might be time to spend the money. The key there is consistently.
If you can't see where the sight was when the sear broke, slow the trigger pull down until you do.
AB
March 5th, 2015, 11:42 AM
Oh, and I don't think you will start reflexively racking the slide under stress. If you think you might, give it a month or so and at a C4 shoot I will induce some stress and we can see what you do.

Its a little over $150 for the LT Pro Laser, Reaction Tyme Target and the blue gun. With the laser you can use your gun, of course limited to 1 shot.
I'm going to try dry fire. However I was sure every shot I broke at the match was right on.

Good times.
You've inspired me to start working at it again. Thanks!

100 draws and 100 mag changes.
Today marks a special day. I have killed a Glock mag during today's dry fire. I always use the same mag as the one that goes in the gun as to not beat up all my mags. Today, it would only seat about 50% of the time, and upon inspection, the feed lips had become so worn/damaged or whatever (they actually look fine to me) that they would no longer retain a round and they were coming out in the magwell and gumming up the works.
It was retired after a brief ceremony.

First few runs were decent, but that heat is unrelenting and I was pretty much done in about an hour and a half. I will say that 250 meaningful rounds a week will take you really far. I strongly believe there will be no "ah-ha!" moments unless you are actually pulling the trigger on live ammo. Dry fire is great and will also take you far, but only so far. Live fire gives your eyes the practice watching things happen from shot to shot. Once you relax your vision enough, you'd be really surprised what you can see in those fast intervals. IMHO, the biggest thing that holds people back is not really having any idea where their sights were at the moment the gun went bang. Once you can keep both eyes open and really watch those sights' position at the moment of detonation, your world will turn.

I agree with what you are saying.
But as a point of information that may be unique to me, I find that when shooting a handgun with both eyes open my point of focus is the target - I want ot know if it moves, and if so in what direction. This causes the handgun sights to appear like a holograph, they "float" in front of my eyes. This is perhaps why I prefer a sight with no bars, dots, squares, or dashes. Just black and bold, with the front sight filling as much of the rear sight as possible.
"Sight alignment" goes like this;
Threat recognized
Scan field of view for threats "helpers" while drawing
Bring focus back to primary threat as my handgun approaches arm extension
front sight: top even with top of rear sight, amount of light visible on both sides of front sight equal
break the shot
repeat
Of course, this would be a horrible technique for a bullseye shooter, but I'm not one of those. :approve:

I've always said that you only need the sight picture that allows you to hit the required target in the fastest time. Given the correct target size and distance, that is a completely valid technique. Smaller/farther requires more effort than bigger/closer. I completely vary my sight technique depending on size/distance. Everything from pure point shooting to two-hand bullseye with one eye closed. Practice allows us to recognize faster what sight technique is required for us to make each shot with an acceptable percentage chance.

Has she tried the Indian ?If she doesn't like Chicken Tikka Masala, she would be the first Brit I know who doesn't. I know it's not Asian, but close enough.
India is in Asia........dumbass.

Asian food typically refers to Chinese / Cantonese food.
Indian food is how Korma / Masala type stuff is referenced in conversation no ?
Yes I know where India is. I could point it out on a map.
Persis is the best Indian restaurant in town... Cypress is the best restaurant in town.

I don't know how a warm blooded American Man, can eat bait wrapped in rice and seaweed and pay 2x the price of the cooked stuff on the same menu.
It's un-American and borderline Metrosexual...
My wife Loves the stuff, but that's fine, the very statement implies she is the correct gender to eat it ;-)

Your whole premise is shit. Nearly raw and/or raw meat is a staple of manly men the world over. You don't get it, because you cook all your meats until they are shoe leather and put sauce on them so they don't give you cotton mouth.

No but that was how my mom cooked God bless here. We never went hungry but it all tasted the same.
My opinion has more weight than yours because people were overlooking meat in my town when Indians did not know we came in different colors.
Where is the tolerance huh ??

India and Indian food is disgusting. Curry makes brown people smell like shit and food taste like shit.
My problem with Indian food, like a lot of Cajun food, usually comes from chefs that think all you have to do is make it spicy enough to burn all the discerning taste buds off before the diner knows it's shit.

Did another hundred with the pistol.
Also did a bunch of mag changes with the rifle. Lost count of how many.

Shot the local match today, so no dry fire. Need to work on learning how fast I can go on small targets at distance. When I took my time, I was doing good work. Threading A zone hits between no-shoots while leaning over on one leg and stuff. Awesome. Except, when it works out well, I say "self, we need to do that a little bit faster next time." And it all goes to hell. Working on the drills for that now.

120 draws and I did the 10 mag change drill twice. I got to nine and screwed the 10th mag change up three times in a row. At the end of the second 10 mag change drill I had done so many I was legit tired of holding the gun up, and it's not like a G35 is a boat anchor or anything!

Live fire Friday and today (Saturday got rained out). I had an interesting day because I made a switch on my gun that made it shoot slightly high. Not usually a big deal, but Friday and today were both working the heck out of trigger control and sight alignment. In the beginning, I was pulling my shots low, which actually resulted in a lot of hits, so I was confident in my sight picture. Once I actually got the trigger control back to where it needed to be, I started missing. Freaked me out a bit because I knew my ammo was accurate and I could feel the better control over the trigger, but there was no "ding" on the steel. Once I put the rear sight three clicks lower I was back in business.
600+ rounds at 8" circles never closer than 25 yards with movement in between shooting positions. Humbling, frustrating, make-you-want-to-throw-things drills, but there's a lot to be learned there. Remember, everybody's a hero at the five yard line.

Depends on the training goal. The goals I'm currently pursuing need more target feedback than I can get in the rain. I think I'll start a thread...

I went to the range and put about 200 rounds downrange and then came home and hit the dry fire. I practiced 160 degree transitions, but instead of my handgun I used a 10 lb dumbbell. I figure the gun will seem really light after a few weeks of that.

Didn't realize it had bee so long since I posted here!
Today was a fairly big shooting day. 360 rounds pistol and about 120 rifle. It's easy to keep an exact count because I load my belt full (two rifle at 30 rounds and 4 pistol at 18 each) every time I go back to the loading table. I make a mark on my range sheet for the day every time I load up.
