I was just browsing the "Real Guns" website looking at data. Get this . . .

1784 FPS with 3534LbFt of energy.

I dunno about you guys, but if that don't qualify as a Thumper I don't know what would!!! Holy MACKEREL !!!!:yikes::yikes::yikes::yikes:

No wonder it puts holes through 2000+ pound critters !!!!

But I can't help but wonder . . . . 3534 lbft of energy slapping the trigger puller in the shoulder . . . . . think that will leave a mark? :nyahnyah:

It really helps if you have a nice brass buttplate.

Careful with that stuff Rumbler. A load like that in your Marlin will be a wholistic experience. It might give you a liver quiver that you might not be able to recover from...

Cant remember how hot it was loaded but I shot a 45-70 revolver, it was pretty mild compared to the sw460 mag

What was it a 500 grain bullet

Yeah. Can you imagine the 600 grain solids?!?!?!

Seriously, I don't feel the littlest need to shoot something like that.

I'm thinking of taking some 230 grain .451 round nose bullets, hitting them on the end with a hammer to make them bigger in diameter, and putting them on top of about 15 grains of IMR 800-x. :hrmmm:

Just before I stuck an arrow in a big old doe this morning "VW" came trotting past my stand. If he is an ounce he is 350lbs. Might need some of them shortly. I plan on ending his career real soon. Wish I had had a rifle instead of my bow this morning.

He is a hog, we did have a big boar bear show up about 2 weeks ago, but he didn't hang around long only got pics of him one night. Bodo I will see if I can find some trail camera pics of him, I usually delete them after viewing, but I may have saved one on the laptop at the proshop.

Looking at bears and pigs now? Goats aren't satisfying enough?

Here is a pic of the doe I stuck Sunday morning. Rage broadhead through the spine. She never took a step. First time I have ever dropped one in their tracks with a bow. Almost a straight down shot right between the shoulder blades.

Bodo, PLEASE don't post this comment to Sea Dog, regarding his stove mishap!

These are a lot of fun to shoot. These have the 26" barrel and 9 round tubular magazine.

Reloading the .45-70 is simpler because it's not 'necked down' right?

The cases aren't necked down, but they are tapered slightly. The cases have on outer diameter of .480 at the mouth and .504 just in front of the rim.

I would like to add . . .

Bodo, you are on the right track with your statement, but you may be interested in WHY if you do not know already. In a word: "HEADSPACING".

Rimmed cartridges be they pistol or rifle headspace off that rim. Bottleneck cartridges technically headspace off the end of the case shoulder.

HOWEVER

With bottleneck cartridges there can be a number of different factors that prevent that cartridge from headspacing as desired. Basically; everything from the point where the bottleneck begins to the actual mouth of the case.

Look at this image. I am sure that you can imagine how a number of factors such as neck length, shoulder size, angle of the area between the shoulder and the case neck can affect proper chambering.

http://blog.westernpowders.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/03/223-correct-headspace72.jpg

So . . in order to load (or reload) bottleneck cartridges correctly a person has to be aware of a lot of dimensions. Like these:

http://garyleemiller.files.wordpress.com/2014/04/30-06_cartridge.jpg?w=640&h=430

Again, with a rimmed cartridge style, there are only a couple of things that can screw up proper/safe chambering, as this image shows:

http://www.lasc.us/45Colt-Cart-Dimen-3.jpg

Now it is also very important to understand that there ARE exceptions to these basics. For instance virtually all autoloading pistol cartridges. They are rebated rims (meaning the rim is the same size or smaller than the case body) such as the .45ACP, 9MM, .380 ACP and they headspace off the case mouth.

One last reference . . just in case . . . definition of "headspace":

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Headspace_(firearms)

Hope this helps.

A gentleman has loaned me a .45-70 Sharps to hunt with this year for a little bit in exchange for some meat. I am excited to put it to work. Should be fun and interesting.

Most of those older Sharps do well with a big bullet (over 500 grains) and may shoot a lead bullet better than a jacketed one. You gonna shoot Black Powder in your cartridge for a truly authentic feel? Jim

No sir. The gentleman that let me borrow only shot leverrevolution in it. If it was my own I would load it up with black powder and a lead ball. But, I am not gonna deviate from what he was using. I don't care if the deer is 50 yards or 500 yards its gonna be awesome!

I have a new england single shot 45-70. It is the only gun that has given me scope eye. I hang deer by the neck and shoot 80% of my deer in the neck. It is the only gun that has made the neck hang impossible
2 have ripped off the buck pole when the hide was removed do to a 45-70 wound. That was 350 gr hollow points ...core lock.

And to think.........

With my .50 Beowulf, I'm getting 1900 FPS with Rainer 334gr plated HP's... no pressure signs... maybe 2000 FPS is doable... from an AR15... that's good stuff.
