Just got my chrony and wanted to make sure I am gonna be setting it up right.
15 feet and level for rifle and 5 for pistol is what I am seeing.
Groups of 4 ok or should I bump it to 5 shot strings?
Appreciate it.

The distance is not a fixed or defined specification per-se. The distance is for the purpose of preventing muzzle blast from effecting the velocity readings.

Thus, you will find a great deal of practical flexibility in distance based on the cartridge being tested and the characteristics of the rifle (or pistol).

The number of shots "appropriate" is also flexible based on the information you seek to learn.

For instance; three shots is plenty if you are doing load development and simply want to know if you are "in the ball park yet".

Five shots - in my opinion - is the point where you begin to get sufficient data to make judgement regarding the quality (consistency) of the ammunition you are testing. More shots may be appropriate if diagnosing deviation. For instance, "is it consistent charge weight or crimp, or lack of crimp, or neck tension causing the deviation in velocity?" or you simply desire to minimize deviation and confirm success of failure in your efforts.

This is abbreviated. A lot more can be said on this topic, but I think that this is a pretty good snapshot of the basics . . . . hope it helps. A chronograph is a wonderfully useful tool whose value - particularly to a handloader - is most frequently underappreciated.

I bought a Chrony F1. It is still in the box 'cause I don't have a clue how to use it...anyone out there can teach me how?

With the chronys that have the ability to take a remote switch, the switch let's you scroll through the individual shots, as well as giving avg, hi, lo, es, avg, as well as other data..
The one I have has the remote display so I can put it. On the bench, the switch is a simple momentary pushbutton that can be made from a 1/8 stereo jack, a pushbutton switch and a piece of pvc with caps to house it in..
About 5-7 bucks worth of parts..
I saw a post about a f1 as well...if it has the small headphone jack you should be good..

I'll see if I can dig up some info on instructions and pin outs if any

I also saw some programming code for one a while back that would output data strings to a pc..
I don't use that, as I usually use a russian space pen ( pencil) to log my data

I have that same chrono but didn't know you could hook up a remote like that. Might have to invest in one.

For what it's worth... Like Rumbler said not fixed formula here. When I work up hand loads I run 10 rounds of each load (starting at min and working toward max) thru the chrono. Somewhere along the way I find "the sweet spot" for velocity and accuracy. I have found that sunny vs. cloudy days make a difference too. Get the chrono in the shade if you can. Take your time when shooting. No one likes to put holes in their nice new chrono. (Ask my how I know that one!). Sounds like you have a nice setup. Enjoy.

I really want to get a chance to run some of my hand loads through one and see where they are at.

Yeah thanks man, I'm gonna try and work up some 55grs with a few different powders and see what I can squeeze out of a 10.5"
