No, but I can get some Gerber baby food. Chicken or Turkey.
Question for Jafar and other plate knowledgeable folks, are shooter cut plates needed for the rear, or should the be non-shooter cut?

You can use any kind for the back, but I thought AR500 made rear-specific plates now.

Good question.(s)

BR549
July 15th, 2014, 04:24 PM
Or for the front for that matter.....in theory "curved" sounds more comfy but the plate is 12x10 inches...

My torso is more like 18x24, so what is it curving around? I am thinking flat would be just as comfortable. Jafar, AB, what say you plate experts?

Dale Gribble

Jafar

Mine are curved, mine are comfortable. Is it a huge price difference between straight and curved? I just can't see a good reason. I would also think that curved would have a better energy dispersion like a bell. Let me call my ballistic unicorn and confirm.

NJC
July 15th, 2014, 05:09 PM
Mine also are curved and comfortable. If you are probably just going to wear them on date night or at the range.. flat will be fine. If TSHTF, you will be happy to have them.

If price is the same ..curved... also shooter or swimmer cut.. if you do not, you will see why very quickly.

That's a great link. Anyone who has been to the Combat Trauma class has learned the importance of wearing plates and avoiding the extremely high percentage of fatalities that come from damage to that part of the body.

The guy in the bottom pic is a Marine wearing an OTV. His plates aren't improper, it's an illusion made my the style of the carrier. His plates are exactly where the guy's are above him. Find the jugular notch and measure down to the top of the carrier on both; almost the same distance.

Jafar, is curved known to be more protective than flat? Otherwise a flat back plate saves some cash for a wee bit of comfort and no protective advantages.

Jafar, is curved known to be more protective than flat? Otherwise a flat back plate saves some cash for a wee bit of comfort and no protective advantages.

I can't prove this first hand, and I know some around these parts don't approve of my understanding of physics; but it would seem that a flat plate that receives rounds at a 90 degree angle would offer less protection that one with a slightly curved. I guess that's just my educated guess.

I know that bullets striking vehicles at an angle can deflect, and ones striking at 90 degrees do not. That's not even armored, so my bet is the physics would be the same.

BR549

This is tricky. Any shots taken off of normal benefits from the projectile 'seeing' increased thickness of armor. Non-planar plates would offer better protection but you'd see significantly more ricochet potential. At least that's how I understand it.

That 308 eked through after several other hitsWhen he shoots the 5.56 5 round string it looks like he shooting at the back curve of the plate. In other words he is shooting at the fucking plate backwards. Maybe that explains the spalling in the box. Look at the video at about 8.14 minutes. He puts the plate back in the box wrong side out! Plus ballistic bobs armor is worn too low as per AB's excellent post.

I was using ceramic SAPI's. Heavy as shit and cumbersome. It might be a mind game but it feels like adding an extra 30 lbs. And I haven't seen any of the civilian brand carriers have cummerbunds that looks like they could handle side plates without wearing out and falling apart rapidly.

Yes. By about 75% in the last couple of years.

I can't address plate carriers and that stuff (possibly why the price appears to have gone down?) but "raw" ar500 has gone through the roof.
