If we did another group buy, what would you be interested in?

I'll let this run for a while, and then I will take a few of the suggestions and put up a poll.

I can try, however as others will attest to, its very difficult to get a better deal on ammo as an FFL than you can find yourself using an engine like ammoseek.com or gunbot etc.. We would probably have to buy a billion rounds to beat the online prices.

Mostly .45ACP and 5.56 right now. But I'm always open to .308WIN, 10mm, 7.62x39, 44spl, and (since the group buy) 7.62x54r. I'm not really hurting for anything but .45ACP but that is mostly due to not going out and buying any in a while and taking a bunch of friends to the range to introduce them to the sport. :)

I just bought 2k rounds of Wolf Gold 223 55gr from Wideners. It worked out to .34 a round or so with shipping. Its good stuff, brass, boxer, re-loadable, sealed primers, annealed necks. Like many good things, made in Taiwan.

Not trying to be a lowballer or anything and I want y'all to make money but Trophy Creek in Monticello has the same thing for $357 OTD. Neither one of those prices seem like group buy savings. The Type 53's were a great value. Yes they required some fixin' up but how could anyone turn that down. Maybe the police trade-ins would fit that pattern better.

I realize that. I based that on a single unit price. If we had 10 folks go for it, we could probably get a decently lower prices from the distributor, and we would be willing to work with less markup. Its a lot less effort for us to distribute guns the way we did with the T53's than it is to have 1 appointment every day for the next 10 days.

Question for any Machinist on here. The above link says the mag well is broached. Why would it not be machined out which is a lot quicker and cheaper. What am I missing.

Bodo
June 11th, 2014, 03:03 PM
Broaching is MUCH quicker and easier to do on a dedicated machine. Do the initial cuts on the CNC and then off to the broaching maching. Tolerances on a magwell aren't very tight. Broaching is good enough.

Generally we can not beat the price that you find online.

Occasionally we get a deal on something kinda one off, like defensive ammo (Winchester Ranger).

BTW, the best drum price I've seen was around from Academy Sports. 5k for 12,500 rounds. $.40 per round. Considering you can buy the same ammo from lucky gunner at .37 per round in 500 round quantity its more of a cool than a buy.

My cost from one vendor is $65.95, from another it is $59.35, but I'm not sure what color it is.

Even if we did it at 10% markup and we ATE the shipping, it would be $70.18 with tax.

I have an observation to share. Take it for what it is worth to you.

Brick and mortar businesses, especially smaller ones, cost more to operate than virtual retailers who can order shit by the pallet load and set it on a warehouse floor somewhere the public is not welcome into.

Thus, it really is unfair and unreasonable to ask - or expect - an actual local small business operator to "cost match" (or even get really close to) the virtual retailers.

It really IS up to the buyer; pay what it costs to keep the local guys doors open, or don't. Yes or no, off or on. Simple stuff.

Again; just an observation . . . . . :)

Mike, we are very fortunate to be able to provide the pricing we do.

Rumbler
June 16th, 2014, 09:22 PM
I'm with you 110% on that Daniel. Talon, and myself, feel the same way.

And I can't say that it does not make sense to TRY and get the stuff we all use at the best possible price.

But I also believe that a lot of folks lose sight of how the retail business works.

My "favorite" example is ammunition. Our ammo prices are ridiculous. We mark it up ZERO PERCENT. And bricks of .22LR are sitting on the shelf for $75.00 (with several cases to back them up in storage). People flip out over that price.

What they don't realize is that because we are a small business and can not order 20 million rounds at a time the only reason we have 22LR ammo on the shelf is because we ordered it 6-10 months ago. The price we paid is what it was going for back then.

We wouldn't be in business long if we took a 50% loss to "compete" with ammoengine.com, or luckygunner.com, or bass pro shop. Or Walmart. So, all we can do is let a significant investment of operating capital sit there and gather dust while we listen to folks tell us the same ammo is on luckygunner.com for 1/2 the price.

It makes me sad. And more than a little frustrated. :(

Dale Gribble

Do you carry a multi-tool? If so which one? I'm personally in the market, and I like the MUT (except its price) because it will fit my otis cleaning kit, and it has a pin punch built in. But I don't like that it needs an adapter to use standard 1/4 driver bits.

To be honest with you, I don't. I've never been one of those guys, even in the military. If there was something I couldn't fix with duct tape, a bayonet, or the correct application of plastique, I just deemed as being too temperamental to be in a combat zone.

But I'm sure they are a great addition to an operations bag for rear echelon maintenance or something of that sort. I just can't justify keeping one on my personal gear. I do have this beside my IFAK though;

I've got the M48 United Cutlery one. I'm not in to throwing knives, hatchets, and the sort. I'd rather drink beer and watch children throw axes, lol.

You eat off of a ceramic plate, you don't wear it on your chest and hoover bullets to you.

I was reading to fast. I thought they were talking about metal targets, not protection vests with plate.

FWIW AR250/400/500 stands for Abrasion Resistance and is heat treated tempered metal and has been used for years in metal fabrication where needed. It's readily available in plate or flat bar.

July 4th, 2014, 09:29 AM
Like I said, these guys also do AR500 steel. Jafar, take a look and tell me what you think.

1-10x12 shooter cut plate is 7.5 lbs. The only real weight variation is the size of the plate and the anti-spall coating.
