Just checked a few places including Powder Valley and all three are out of stock. What are you loading?

Dipstick bought a bunch of ammo that wasn't ammo but was instead bullets and brass.

You can use H4895 in 308 no problem.

Keep an eye on http://www.gunbot.net/reloading/Powder/

I'm going to load those bullets and brass for TS... the only issue is I don't have his rifle with me to do testing... so I want to stay with the above powders as they are known to me extensively and I'm sure I can develop a "general shooting load" that will perform to standard.

Of course there are PLENTY of other powders out there that will work I'm sure, H4895 being one. David... you can get the H4895 and we can go from there if you want.

Sorry, I don't pay attention to IMR vs H. The difference is about the same as the lot to lot difference within a brand.

Powder Valley does have Ramshot TAC in stock as an option.

Just looked at Powder Valleys site. They are now out of Ramshot TAC. That was quick.

Natchez shows Ramshot TAC in stock. Haven't bought powder in a while and it seems that when it's available one should get right on it.

Wait. What?!?!

From the Hodgdon/IMR site:

.308, 175gr SMK

H4895 Start: 40.0gr, 2489 fps, 39,100cup \ Max: 42.7gr,2647, 49,000 cup

IMR 4895 Start: 41.0gr, 2463 fps, 42,800psi \ Max: 45.0c, 2704fps, 57,800psi

If I ever run into anything even close to that much lot-to-lot varrience I will quit loading ammunition. Period.

If I ever get handed a hand loaded cartridge by someone who says "Sorry, I don't pay attention to IMR vs H" I will most likely run. And I hate running. :p

I work the the load up again lot to lot (but not as in depth as I did the first time), but I just have not seen the stated variance. Well, if I have perhaps its because I don't load anywhere near the edge. Your mileage may vary ;)

So do I wait for IMR 4895 or not? DSH should have 10 lbs of that coming in a week.

David,
get what Bob recommends.

He may have a proven recipe for H4985, but he definitely has one for IMR 4895.

Sure!
On checkout page it says most of their stuff are backordered. I'll call tomorrow before placing order.

Better get what you can get when you can get it. Those powders are pretty scarce. Jim

That is what the reloading manuals are for to reach these loads!

Damn that's high priced powder... I guess that's why it's in stock. I just got an 8lb. jug of IMR 4064 for $156.00 plus HAZMAT and shipping and was still cheaper than that...

I saw 4895 and 4064 at Kevins in Tallahassee today. The 4064 is pretty much the same as 4895

I think you're mistaken about that . What is the source of your load data?

The burn rates are very close... look at IMR's burn rate chart. They are both billed as versatile powders with a wide range of applications. Of course specific load data should be consulted for specific loads.

Both have an established history with .308 loads.

http://www.imrpowder.com/burn-rate.html Point taken but I still don't think their interchangeable . I tend to follow published load data . I guess I'm just not very adventurous when it comes to reloading.

I strongly disagree with that statement.

However.

AirGator is dead nuts right on target, at least in my limited experience.

I agree... what I think the other poster was trying to say was IMR 4064 would be a good alternative... I hope so at least. I'd never just swap data based on just burn rates...
