Was driving back from Perry recently and could have sworn I saw a new gun range sign on the way into Tallahassee. Anyone know anything about it? Maybe 10 miles east?

Yeah it's an actual place. That's why the sign says Capps... just like the sign that says Lamont, if you were looking at the sign, yo ass would be in Lamont....

Yeah but in Capps the welcome to part is back to back on the same sign.

Maybe you just weren't a long distance trucker back in the day.

He's probably talking before I-10, when U.S. 27 was the main route.

10 was built in the late 60s, I just remember the construction going on. You weren't even born then.

The first time I did a run up US 27 I was 3 days old... and I dunno when dad began but he rode shotgun for a produce hauler from Cairo who ran regular loads to Fort Myers back in the early '30s. Then in the mid-1950s through about 1976 he drove a truck up then back down it every week. Dad said slow down religiously... very, very, religiously for Perry, and also to be observant of the speed limit at Capps and Lamont. I have to believe he knew what he was talking about.

I understand that Perry was also a very bad place to be caught DWB, back in the day.

In general, I make it a point to give all far-away small towns a close adherence to their speed limits because writing tickets to "outsiders" is such an obvious potential boost for local government revenues.

Capps & Lamont never had local police that I was aware of, but in my experience FHP seemed real attracted to that area... especially, or including, late at night.

True as far as it goes... I started FSU in 1967. We lived in Greenville for a year and a half 1960-1961, and I rode with dad sometimes during the Summer when mom wanted rid of me. I also worked for dad's business driving a truck one Summer before I started at FSU. I think that was the Summer of 1966. But all of my life I went back and forth through Tallahassee for one reason or another.

My dad says FHP and the county sheriffs used to meet up on I-10 before it opened and hold drag races with their patrol cars.

I-10 got built while I was in the Army and stood unconnected for a long time afterwards. I used to ride my bike up and down it for exercise while it was complete here but just completely unused. I never saw anyone on it, not even drag racing coppers. But speaking of copper... I rode back and forth by the "Coppertop" building... Commonwealth building, later Marjorie Stoneman Douglas building... little knowing that I would work in it for many years.
