In Judaism this the highest of Holy Days also known as "The day of atonement." Fasting and prayer exists throughout this period. Of course in 1974 the Arabs started a military conflict, as many Jews were in attendance in synagogues throughout Israel. I'm sure Wikipedia is up to date on this Highest of Holy Days.
