Any interest in doing a trip? Day trip? Camping trip? End to end?

I am pretty familiar with the river although I wouldn't claim "guide" status or anything and I do have some boats I can loan if you're interested and boatless. Seems like it could be a decent group trip if anyone is interested.

Beautiful river, but winding. How long do they say it takes to paddle from 20 to Panacea? NOT THAT I"M INTERESTED

0utlaw

It says 62 miles we usually average 2.5 to 3 MPH so roughly 25 hours of paddling....3 day trip with camping and drinking time.

The Ochlocknee is the only river I've ever seen that seems to get narrower as you go down. It's wide for a mile below the dam where we fished for strippers, but a lot narrow where FR 13 crosses it. I don't know what it's like between these 2 points.

0utlaw
May 26th, 2017, 09:27 PM
Once you get South of Piney it's pretty hit or miss for anything bigger than a jon boat. There are a couple places where the river will be 30 feet wide and a foot deep when the water's down

I'm in depending on the date. I'll likely be in BigBadJon though. I can carry some extra coolers, water jugs and camping gear for others if need be.
I also have a 13' Grumman canoe if anyone would like to use it.

I've wanted to do this trip for a long time but never gotten around to it. Keep us posted.

We (SHTW and I) are going to do about 9 miles tomorrow morning if anybody wants to go shoot me a PM. I have four spare boats, it will probably take about 3 -4 hours and is pretty much an easy to intermediate paddle. We're doing it all down stream put in upstream and take out downstream.

River was up quite a bit the current was really flowing. made for some easy paddling but it was a real workout negotiating the obstacles, and there was a bunch of them.
It would have made a great intro to kayaking trip first mile and a half was easy then got to a few tricky corners to liven things up. the water being up opened a few branches up that we don't normally get to explore it also made the one difficult portion of the trip into an expert/master level section but a little exploring and a short easy portage and we found a new way around it.
With our extra little side trips it was 14.5 miles and we were at the take out point in 3 hours (yes that is flying in a kayak) now full disclosure, the yellow flies were really bad in several places including one spot they swarmed like bees, but it wasn't bad enough to ruin the trip by any means...... Bullfrog is your friend, apply often

If you can't tell I am really stoked about this so here's the deal... if you're "In" post your date or dates you can go, how long a trip and if you want to camp or not. We'll start whittling out details :goodjob:

When I was a kid we ate fish 3 nights a week, but hardly ever went fishing. Daddy had a acre of Catalpa trees laid out on a grid just like citrus or peaches. Even irrigated.

Dad kept every carpenter, plumber and electrician in town stocked with bait and they in turn kept us in fish.

We decided that last week's trip was so fun we'd do it again. When we got to the river it was down a good 5-6 feet from last week, the current was a lot slower and there were tons more snags to navigate. We made the first 1/3 of the trip it was nice, slight overcast, light wind, there were tons of sandbars so we stopped and ate lunch. As soon as we were done it started raining a little, still not bad, kept us cool and the breeze started working in our direction. Well it didn't take long and we started hearing thunder and it was moving our way. We ended up power paddling the last 1/3 of the trip, by the time we made the landing my shoulders and back were burning and I was damn glad to get out of the boat and the river. We hadn't been 5 minutes getting the boats in the truck and heading up the road and the bottom fell out rain thunder lightning the whole nine yards. It sure made all that pain and effort seem worth it.

We sure need to get a trip planned up, but either way we're going to hit the river somewhere most weekends so if you want in on it lemme know.

All but two of ours are Wallyworld specials. They hold up fine and I don't get indigestion when one scrapes bottom on rough concrete or bounces off a tree at full boogie because I couldn't turn hard enough, we aren't afraid to to take them places I wouldn't dream of taking a $1000 hand laid fiberglass boat.

Our thought getting the first ones was "We'll get cheap boats, if we like it we'll buy something nicer" we did buy nicer boats but only slightly, they're cheap boats with nicer features than our first ones.
